Secure identification of pipelines

Pipe signs are used to label pipelines and help identify what material or substance is being transported through the pipes. This is important to facilitate maintenance and repairs of pipelines and to prevent accidents and incidents.

There are different types of pipe signs depending on the needs and requirements of a specific installation. Common materials used during manufacturing are

  • plastic
  • metal
  • laminate material

It is important that pipe signs are placed in visible locations along the pipe system and that they are easily readable and cannot be easily destroyed or removed. It is also important that they are updated and replaced when necessary, for example if the material being transported through the pipe changes or if there are changes in the design or operation of the system.

  • Secure identification: Pipe signs clearly indicate what is being transported - for safer operation and fewer accidents.
  • Support for maintenance and servicing: The labelling simplifies troubleshooting, repairs and conversions.
  • Several material choices: Available in plastic, metal or laminate depending on the environment and requirements.
  • Long shelf life: The pipe signs are durable and designed to last over time.
  • Visible location: Mounted where they are easy to see - for quick and clear identification.

Colour coding of the pipe system

Colour codes are often used to further facilitate identification of the content. Colour coding follows the international standard ISO 14726.

Some of the most common colour codes are:

  • Green: grasp
  • blue: air
  • Red: flammable substances
  • yellow: gas
  • orange: hazardous substances
  • purple: slam
  • brown: oil
