The purpose of a tagout sign

Tagout signs help prevent accidents and injuries. When a machine needs to be maintained or repaired, there is a risk that someone could accidentally start it. The tagout sign acts as a visual reminder along with the physical latch, which is then the lock.

Information on the signs

Tagout signs come in different designs, but in our case they contain the following information:

  • a warning text reading "Do not manoeuvre" or "Do not manoeuvre, work in progress" followed by "This barrier/sign may only be removed by:"
  • place to write who is responsible for the work, which department the person belongs to and when it is expected to be completed
  • a picture of a warning or prohibition symbol

Correct use of tagout signs

It is important to use tagout signs correctly. They should only be used when work is in progress on a machine and should always be removed when the work is finished. It is also important to make sure that the tag is clear and easy to understand and that it is properly attached to the machine.
