Collinder Explains: Projectors

Collinder Explains is our easy-to-read guide where we share knowledge about our product areas in a clear and simple way. Here we go through the basics of signage, labelling and safety to make it easier for you to order the right products for your needs.

Projectors for industrial environments

Projectors are increasingly used in industry to create clear and durable messages on both floors and walls. They are an alternative to decals and floor tapes that wear out and need to be replaced regularly. By projecting symbols and lines with light, the labelling becomes both more visible and significantly less maintenance-intensive. At Collinder, we have been working with projector solutions for various types of industrial environments since 2018. Over the years, we have gained valuable experience of what works well in practice.

In this article, we take a closer look at high visibility projectors and line projectors - how they work, in which situations they are most useful and what benefits they can bring to an industrial environment.

What is a high visibility projector?

In high visibility projector is an industrial-grade LED projector that projects safety symbols directly onto the floor or wall. The symbols can comply with AFS 2023:12, ISO 7010 or other relevant standards, depending on the requirements of your environment. A major advantage of projected warning labels is that the symbol remains clear even where the floor quickly becomes dirty, worn or covered by pallets or forklift traffic. Depending on optics and placement, the same projector can be used for different symbol sizes and brightnesses. Light is not washed out and only appears where and when you want it to.

What is a line projector?

In line projector is used to project clear lines of light, for example to mark walkways, truck routes, loading zones or safety distances. Instead of tape or painted lines, the marking is created with light, which means it doesn't wear off or get covered in the same way as physical floor markings.

The light line can be either steady or pulsating, depending on your needs and location. By adjusting the way the projector is mounted and aimed, the length and width of the line can also be customised. Line projectors are particularly useful in environments with high traffic or frequent material movement, where clear visual boundaries contribute to a safer and more structured workplace.

Interactive projection

With interactive projection, safety markings can be switched on and off automatically depending on what is happening in the environment. The projector connects to sensors or existing systems and is only activated when needed, providing clear signalling and reducing the risk of important messages being lost in the crowd.

This could mean, for example, that a STOP symbol is projected when a truck approaches an intersection, or that a pedestrian crossing is illuminated when a person is about to cross a trucked area. Similarly, a warning symbol can be activated when gates are opened, when machines start up or when loading surfaces are used.

Interactive projection allows safety information to be displayed exactly when it is relevant, creating a more attentive and safe working environment without the need for constant re-labelling or physical remodelling of surfaces.

Benefits of projected labelling

Traditional warning and line marking with decals and floor line tape often work well, but in high-traffic environments they can wear out quickly and need regular replacement. Projectors offer a longer-term alternative where the marking remains clear over time - even in environments where the floor is exposed to dirt, moisture or heavy wear.

Projectors are a good option when:

  • Floor stickers and tapes wear out or get damaged quickly
  • Markings often covered by equipment, pallets or traffic
  • Safety messages need to be reinforced in particularly vulnerable zones
  • You want the marking to be driven by behaviour, for example, the symbol lights up first on movement

In many operations, the best solution will be a combination, with projected warning signs complementing fixed signs and providing extra clarity in the most critical areas.
